What is brain hemorrhage?

The brain is actually a type of brain stroke. When an artery in the brain get bursts and starts bleeding which in turn, kills the surrounded brain cells then it results in a brain hemorrhage.

What is brain hemorrhage?

How this bleeding occurs?

There are many reasons for bleeding in the brain. However, the common ones are:

  1. Trauma: Any injury in the brain is one of the most common causes for people who are younger than 50.
  2. High B.P: After a long period of time, high blood pressure can weaken the blood vessel walls. In fact, high B.P is a preventable cause of brain hemorrhage.
  3. Blood Vessel Weakness: There could be a weakness in blood vessels in and around the brain at the time of birth, and can be treated if any symptom develops.
  4. Aneurysm: Aneurysm refers to the weakening of the blood vessels that can swell. It bursts and bleeds in the brain.
  5. Liver disease and brain tumors are also amongst the major causes.

Symptoms of the brain hemorrhage:

The symptoms of the brain can vary. Symptoms depend on where the bleeding occurs, how much the bleeding is severe, and how many tissues are affected. Even the symptoms can develop suddenly or can take time.

Generally, the common symptoms are:

  1. Severe headache suddenly
  2. Seizures
  3. Feeling weakness in arms or legs
  4. Vomiting or nausea
  5. Weak reflex response, lethargicness
  6. Vision problems
  7. Numbness
  8. Speaking problems and also difficulty in understanding the speech
  9. Problems in reading and writing
  10. Balance and coordination problems
  11. Unconsciousness

Brain hemorrhage diagnosis and treatments:

Basically, there are 4 types of brain hemorrhages. The type depends on the bleeding location.

  1. Epidural hemorrhage: If the bleeding is between the brain and the skull, it is epidural hemorrhage.
  2. Subdural hemorrhage: In subdural hemorrhage, the bleeding is above the brain and below the inner layer of the dura.
  3. Subarachnoid hemorrhage: If the bleeding is between the brain and the membranes covering it, it is subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  4. Intracerebral hemorrhage: In an intracerebral hemorrhage, the bleeding occurs inside the brain.

Generally, the tests for diagnosing the brain hemorrhage are:

  1. MRI Scan
  2. CT Scan
  3. X rays and Lumbar Puncture

The treatment of brain hemorrhage involves surgeries inside the brain to prevent swelling.

There is a process called craniotomy in which the surgeon clips an artery by removing a part of the skull. This is done in the case hemorrhage caused by a burst cerebral aneurysm.
